UN No.: 1165

Hazard Class: Class 3 Flammable liquid, Packing Group II

Molecular Formula: C₄H₈O₂

Molecular Weight: 88.11

1,4‑Dioxane is a colourless, clear cyclic diether liquid with a faint ethereal odour. It is fully miscible with water and most common organic solvents such as alcohols, ethers, ketones and esters, featuring strong dissolving capacity for resins, cellulose derivatives, oils and waxes

Typical Physical Properties

  • Boiling point: 101 °C
  • Melting point: 12 °C
  • Relative density (20 °C): 1.036 g/cm³
  • Flash point (closed cup): 12 °C
  • Autoignition temperature: 180 °C
  • Explosion limit in air: 2.0% ~ 22.0% by volume
  • Vapour density (air=1): 3.03 (vapour heavier than air)

Main Applications

It is widely used as an excellent polar aprotic solvent.

  1. Solvent for cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose, resins, adhesives, printing inks, dyes and grease.
  2. Stabilizer for chlorinated solvents.
  3. Reaction medium in organic synthesis, pharmaceutical and fine chemical production.
  4. Wetting agent and dispersant for textile processing; laboratory solvent for analytical testing.

Safety Notes

1,4‑Dioxane is highly flammable. Its vapour can travel to ignition sources and flash back. It tends to form explosive peroxides upon long‑term exposure to air and light. It is classified as a suspected human carcinogen; direct inhalation, skin contact and ingestion should be strictly avoided. Operations must be carried out in well‑ventilated areas with explosion‑proof facilities and proper PPE. Store away from open flame, heat sources and strong oxidants
